Chapter 11

Hammer rushed off the ferry and onto Western Forest Channel Station. People on the platform gave him annoyed looks as he bolted out and up the boardwalk to Rain's apartment complex. He swiped his Notepad to gain entrance to the building. Nothing happened. He swiped again. Nothing. He hated these expensive complexes. The security was always too tight and this was a prime example. Rain was probably fine, but he wanted to make sure. Whatever he had seen on that informative was just too strange to discount out of hand, and the strange hole he had seen on the ferry was equally worrying, not to mention that man just walking in on her through it.

If it was the security system, he could attempt a third time and someone should pay attention – three was the magic number after all, one or two items didn't make a list, deaths occurred in triplets, and three was the number of times something had to be tried to know it really wouldn't work. He swiped his notepad again. It lit up with a query. He pressed the emergency button. Someone's face showed up.

“Yeah?”

“My friend... colleague, rather,” better to play it safe, “ lives in this complex.”

“What's the emergency?”

“I think that she may be hurt.”

The security guard sighed. “Okay, I'll come over.” The screen cut out as the guard stood up from his seat.

Hammer stood twiddling his thumbs.

In Rain's apartment, Leptep shook himself awake. He had morphed back into his regular shape while sleeping, but his energy levels were low. Keeping him body coherent whilst both expanding and coming under attack was draining. His master would not be happy that his ward had disappeared, but he had a feeling that Rain would be able to handle herself for now. Leptep had done all he could. Licking his toes to wet them for better grip, he scrambled up to the sink and flicked the tap on with his tail so he could fill his belly with that cool liquid. Feeling somewhat better, and with nothing to do but wait for Avan to check in or for Rain to return, the reptile closed his eyes and fell into a slumber.
